The moral dilemma of a real-life Dexter Morgan
Elected as President and had run a city as a mayor? Tick.
Kill bad guys in his spare time? Tick.
Claim you’re doing a good deed for society? Tick.
I’m not referring to the character Dexter from the successful television series of the same name. I’m talking about a real man by the name of Rodrigo Duterte.
Let me get the differences out of the way:
Rodrigo Duterte killed thousands of people he claimed to be criminals via sending police to kill the accused according to the International Criminal Court allegations. Dexter killed approximately 135 people according to the undisputed reliability of an Internet discussion forum.
Duterte killed rapists, murderers, terrorists, drug dealers, pedophiles, psychopaths, political opponents , police officers and politicians accused of corruption who he later argued were bad for society. Dexter killed drug dealers, murderers, rapists, paedophiles, psychopaths, serial killers, police officers, his brother, his sister, and his friends…
Duterte ordered police officers to plant evidence on the deceased and falsely accused the dead of mass shooting police officers. Dexter nicked his victims’ cheeks with a blade, and retained a drop of blood on a small glass slide as a memento.
Duterte was caught, and awaiting trial for this . SPOILER ALERT! Dexter killed his sister, faked his death in a cyclone, let his son leave with another serial killer to South America, and lived out his life as a lonely lumberjack in the middle of nowhere.
So they aren’t carbon copies of each other but the burning question remains just as pertinent. How would you feel about a real-life Dexter in your neighbourhood? Someone who operates outside of the law, doing what the police, juries, and judge fail to. Performing good deeds that ultimately benefit society, while ridding the earth of murderers, rapists and other various murderous violent human beings?
There was something karmic, and almost heroic about Dexter. I was on his side for the most part. He was a lovable, socially awkward, misunderstood, blood-spatter analyst, who carried around his rather influential dark passenger. He was suffocated by an unexplained urge to kill since he was a teen. His foster-father Harry taught him to channel it into something that would benefit society so he started killing murderers that slipped through the judicial cracks on technicalities. It was his code; the set of rules he lived by.
However in Rodrigo Duterte case he had the power to use law enforcement and political allies as hit men to kill anybody he sees as Criminals in Davao City and the entire country of the Philippines. He is a case of Dexter Morgan getting elected into office and thinks killing will solve everything even though the Philippine constitution has to comply with international human rights laws. The most cited case of how Rodrigo Duterte and his allies created Davao Death Squad. One of his first killings was when he killed somebody he claimed was a rapist and threw him out of a helicopter. Another example is another report of him or his hit man in the police force claiming to kill all the people who he claimed were the three kidnappers and rapists by summary execution without trial.

Rodrigo Duterte had the police, city council, congressional allies, and his daughter impeached Vice President Sara Duterte all to justify having thousands of deaths that spanned decades. Who knows what the allegations were but it's a case if you give Dexter Morgan political power and how does it end with the leader being paranoid at everything. Duterte claimed that he was reducing crime in the Philippines with his drug war but that devolved into abuse of power and privilege by having a mafia from China that sided with him. He made his own daughter corrupt because of his actions.
Dexter Morgan on the other hand had Two subsequent specials after his show ended in 2013.
The law exists for a reason. It’s not perfect, and doesn’t get everything right. But on the whole it does keep society in balance, people on both sides of the law remain accountable, and the legal system may stutter, then flourish, but it doesn’t spiral out of control.
In this case we had a series of congressional hearings showing some ties to the daughter being corrupt to cover up her father's crimes. Now we need to wait for the International Criminal Court trial to start and prove that Rodrigo Duterte is a case of Dexter Morgan getting political power. Yes there were several other people who claimed a Dexter Morgan Status like Manuel Pardo the former cop who killed 9 people he claimed to be drug dealers got executed in 2013 on Florida's death row and Pedro Rodrigues Filho who claimed to kill 100 criminals got convicted for some but is now deceased after his release from a prison in Brazil. But this tops the other two given their claims to fight crime by exterminating criminals by using political power to justify those questionable actions.
